Should your relative live alone?

It's often difficult to know what service needs our relative may have when returning home from the hospital. This checklist may serve as a guide to determine if your older adult relative can safely continue to live alone. (See Questionnaire)

Falls can lead to major changes in the lives of you or your loved ones. Ensuring that reliable and immediate help is available to you at all times can save lives.

Consider these facts about falls:
  • More than one-third of all adults ages 65 and older fall each year.
  • Of those who fall, 20% to 30% suffer moderate to severe injuries such as hip fractures or head traumas that reduce mobility and independence, and increase the risk of premature death.
  • A study on fall victims reveals that 67% of those who fell and remained helpless on the floor for more than 72 hours without getting assistance suffered premature death, compared to only 12% who were helpless for less than one hour.

Consider these facts about medication mismanagement:

  • Almost 30% of all hospital admissions for people over age 65 are directly attributable to medication non-compliance.
  • 125,000 people die each year from complications due to medication non-compliance.
  • Approximately 40% of people enter nursing homes because they are unable to manage their medications at home.

Good News!

Studies have repeatedly shown that home medication errors fall dramatically and people have fewer side effects, fewer doctor visits and fewer hospital admissions when they’re given the information and the means they need to take their prescribed drugs correctly.

Long-Term Care Insurance

Why should you have Long Term Care Insurance?
Almost 50% of Americans will need long term care. This means each couple has nearly a 75% chance of one partner needing this care. In 2014, according to Genworth, the median price for an assisted living private room in the U.S. costs $240/ day ($87,600/ year). 50% of all American couples and 70% of single persons will hit poverty levels within one year of entering an assisted living or skilled nursing facility.  (Read More)
