Long-Term Care Insurance

What is Long-Term Care Insurance?

Most long-term care insurance policies covers any of the following:

  • Care in a Facility that is not an acute-care hospital. Some of the terms used to describe these "facilities" that can provide long-term care services include nursing homes, Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly (RCFE) often called Assisted Living Facilities, convalescent facilities, extended care facilities, custodial care facilities, skilled nursing facilities or personal care homes.
  • Home Care including Home Health Care, Personal Care, Homemaker Services, Hospice Services or Respite Care.
  • Community-Based Care such as Adult Day Care or hospice Facility Care.

Is Long-Term Care Insurance Right For You?
You should NOT buy long-term care insurance if:

  • You can't afford the premiums
  • You have limited assets
  • Your only source of income is a Social Security benefit or Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
  • You often have trouble paying for utilities, food, medicine, or other important needs

You should CONSIDER buying long-term care insurance if:

  • You have significant assets and income
  • You want to protect some of your assets and income
  • You want to choose your own care
  • You want to stay independent of the support of family members
