Tips for Making Useful Gifts Seem More Festive

As a family caregiver you know how important it is to help your elderly parent manage their needs, keep their home clean and comfortable, and support their independence while also ensuring that they stay safe and healthy. During the holiday season you can take this goal and turn it into meaningful and useful gifts that your elderly parent will enjoy but that they can also use to help support their quality of life as they age in place. In many situations older adults suffer from limitations and challenges that can make some of the gifts that you might usually give inappropriate, or make it so that useful gifts such as clothing and household goods are the more practical and beneficial choice.

Just because these gifts are beneficial, however, does not mean that they cannot be fun and festive as well. Adding fun personal touches to these gifts can give your elderly parent an emotional boost and help you make precious memories you can carry with you well into the future.

Let these ideas inspire you for ways that you can make useful gifts seem more festive:

• Add an accessory. Clothes are always a beneficial and useful gift, but they can seem boring if you are giving just basics. Fill out your parent’s wardrobe and still make your gift festive and fun by adding an accessory. Place a broach on a blouse or sweater before wrapping it, tuck a handkerchief in the pocket of a shirt, or include a piece of fun costume jewelry.

• Turn socks into stockings. The origin of the stockings that children hang by the chimney is in simple socks, so get back to basics by tucking treats into pairs of socks that you give your parent. Candy canes or other hard candy or other small gifts are fun to discover when your parent expects just a pair of socks.

• Give the home some personality. Giving household gifts such as gadgets, appliances, and other items is a helpful way to encourage your parent to live safely, comfortably, and healthily in their home. Make these gifts more fun and festive by choosing items in bright colors or patterns, or by adding items that complement the gift, such as new craft supplies to go with a new lamp or a flavored coffee assortment to go with a single cup brewer.

Starting elderly care for your aging parent can be one of the best ways that you can help them to make the most of the holiday season and beyond. This time of year can be stressful and even overwhelming for both your aging parent and you as their family caregiver. The highly personalized services of an elderly home care services provider can ensure that your aging loved one gets everything that they need to stay healthy, happy, comfortable, and safe even when your schedule becomes too busy or you must focus your time and energy on other tasks, such as caring for your children or participating in parties, gatherings, events, volunteer opportunities, and more.

This means that your elder can participate in the holidays in the ways that are right for them, enjoy their special time with their loved ones, and maintain as much independence and activity as possible while managing their individual challenges and limitations. This care can then continue on beyond the holiday season to help your aging parent enjoy the highest quality of life possible into the new year.
