Gentle Home Services is proud to co-sponsor CJE SeniorLiving's Professional Training Event on June 7, 2016Boundaries: The Use of Self Disclosure and Touch with Older Adults Speakers: Rosann Corcoran, LCSW Manager, CJE SeniorLife Counseling Services Sharon Dornberg-Lee, LCSW Clinical Supervisor, CJE SeniorLife Counseling Services The issues of self-disclosure and touch are challenging in clinical relationships. Older adults are often inquisitive about the lives of professionals, who in turn struggle to know how best to respond to clients’ inquiries. Although the use of touch might easily be considered with clients who have sensory deficits, are going through serious illness or crises, or have lost a loved one, is it always the best option? This program will provide a framework for the worker’s decision-making process in determining when and whether to self-disclose or use touch as interventions in clinical work with older adults. By the end of this session, participants will be able to determine under which circumstances, and with which clients, the use of self-disclosure or touch may be beneficial and in which circumstances it may be detrimental. Strategies for communicating the decision not to self-disclose or use touch will be explored as well. Recommended for Geriatric Care Managers, Social Workers, Case Managers, and others. Relevant to settings including psychotherapy in private practice and agency settings, home health, adult day services, in-patient, long term care and residential settings.
