Is Your Parent’s Face Mask Effective?

6/2/2020

PictureHomecare Highland Park IL - Is Your Parent’s Face Mask Effective?
The COVID-19 virus has made it necessary for everyone to take precautions to avoid getting it and spreading it to others. One of the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has made is to wear a face mask in public when it isn’t possible to stay 6 feet away from others, such as in the grocery store. Many people are making their own face masks out of items they have around the house. While the CDC says that’s okay, it’s also important to make sure the face masks are effective in spreading the virus.

Below are some tips for making sure your aging parent’s mask will help to keep them and others around them safer.

Design Matters

There are all kinds of ideas on the Internet for ways to make a DIY face mask. Some of them require sewing and some of them do not. If you are planning to sew a mask for your parent, or if they are sewing one for themselves, be sure to use a design from a reliable source. The CDC has free instructions available on their website. Hospitals are also a good source for mask designs.

Choose the Right Fabric

Fabric that is tightly woven offers the most protection. Masks should have at least two layers of fabric. When picking fabric, look for one with a high thread count, which will do a better job of keeping respiratory droplets in or out as well as allow your parent to breathe.

Make Sure it Fits

Your parent needs to be able to breathe while wearing the mask, but the mask shouldn’t be so loose that it slips. There should not be gaps around the nose, chin, or cheeks as respiratory droplets could get through them. The mask should also be comfortable enough that your parent doesn’t feel like they need to constantly adjust it, causing them to touch their face with hands that may have germs on them.

Masks Should Be Easy to Use

Your parent’s mask must be easy for them to put on and take off. Make sure they can put the elastic loops around their ears or tie the strings behind their head without having to touch their face.

If your parent struggles with wearing a mask, a homecare provider can assist them. Before going out in public, a homecare provider can help them to put the mask on. Homecare providers can also ensure your parent is comfortable and able to breathe while wearing the mask.
