![]() These past few weeks of violent protests across our country have widened our eyes to the severity and magnitude of racial discrimination that is apparent in all corners of life. The leadership at Gentle Home Services has always been proud to celebrate the diversity and richness of the individuals we employ; welcoming all faiths, all religions, and all nationalities. All of us at Gentle Home Services are just shocked and deeply saddened by the most recent behavior and violence. To understand the fear, anger, pain, and hurt people have endured for far too long is something we wish we could take away tomorrow. Although we cannot change the world or apologize for the actions of others, we stand by our caregivers and employees. We care about YOU and your families, we see YOU and YOU MATTER! You have always mattered to us. It is with great hope that our nation continues to heal and have open conversations and do the next right thing. On behalf of all of our employees, a donation has been made to support ColorofChange.org, the nation’s largest online racial justice organization. With over 1.7 million members, they help people respond effectively to injustice in the world around us. Color of Change helps create a more humane and less hostile world. ![]() The spring is a good time for clearing out closets and dresser drawers. Remove items that are worn and frayed and determine what can be fixed and what can't. Items that are no longer useful can be recycled to make quilts or used as rags. Once that's done, it's time to get organized. Organizing Closets Getting a closet organized can be a big project. It depends on your mom's current closet set up. If all she has is a shelf and a bar for hanging things, it can make it harder to get organized. Purchase a small cube storage unit. Tuck that into the closet against the wall so that it's centered to the door or opening. The fabric, plastic, or wicker baskets that go into the cubes are great for storing small items like scarves, shawls, and leggings. Hang similar items together. In the space above the cube storage, hang items that don't drape down such as blouses and skirts. The other sides of the closet can have dresses and pants organized on one side and sweaters, cardigans, and pullovers on the other. Install hooks on the back of the door for a bathrobe and jackets. Organizing Dressers Smaller items like socks, underwear, t-shirts, and pajamas can go into the dresser drawers. Smaller items like underwear and bras can go into smaller drawers. Bulkier items like pajamas should go into larger drawers. To maximize space, fold them so that they're compact. Follow the rules of halves to do that. Fold in the arms of a t-shirt, fold it into half (vertically), fold it into half twice more (horizontally), and set it aside. Repeat that with other t-shirts. When you put them in the drawer, place them so that they're side by side. It's easy to see the colors and find the right shirt if they're not stacked on top of each other. Do the same with other items like pajama tops, pajama bottoms, and shorts. Fold them into compact rectangles that you can put into the drawer with the others and still see their color. Once your mom's home is clean and organized, have you talked about having home care aides to keep it that way? If your mom has a harder time with housekeeping, a caregiver is a great solution. She'll have a home care aide to help with dishes, dusting, vacuuming, mopping, and laundry. Call our home care agency to schedule services.
