​Are you a Working Caregiver? Then Ask Your Employer About These Resources

A majority of caregivers have a career outside of their caregiving role. In fact, AARP reported that six in ten caregivers are employed. These family members often have to cut back on hours at work or lose promotional opportunities due to their caregiving responsibilities. Fortunately, many companies do offer the resources these family caregivers need to both provide for their family and care for their elderly loved one.  

Although many of the resources available will probably be found in your company’s employee handbook, there are some that you need to ask the human resource department about to get more information on.  

Here are some of the caregiving benefits that should be asked of your employer.  

Telecommuting options. Working from home is a practice that many companies are starting to use. It allows for their employees to often work in the office a few days each week, while working from home the rest of the week. This is still a fairly new idea, so find out if it is something that your company would be willing to offer to you.  

On-site therapy. Caregiving and working can overload you with responsibilities is causing you stress. One way to cope with the different emotions that come with being a caregiver is therapy. Talking to someone may be the medicine you need to feel rejuvenated and refreshed. If there is a therapist on-site, it will be even more convenient to get the help you need.  

Caregiving benefits. Some businesses may also offer their caregiving employees benefits to help with their expenses while caring for their loved one. This includes employee assistance programs and reimbursable elder care services.  

Paid time off. Are there a certain number of days you are allowed to stay home with your loved one, while still getting paid? If so, talk to the human resource department to find out how you can use these days.  

Local services. Are there local services available to help you cope with your role as a caregiver? This includes support groups that will give you an outlet to discuss your concerns and worries with others who are in similar situations. These services may not be through your company, but could still be beneficial for your emotional well-being.  

​Caring for an elderly parent can be hard work, especially if they have a serious medical condition, such as Alzheimer’s disease. If you are unable to provide your loved one with the care they need, a home care provider can. This professional is trained to assist elders with various medical conditions in order to help improve their quality of life and get the help they need in the process.
